Sweet Pea seed is large, typically about 10 seeds to the gram. Lavender and blue sweet pea seed tends to be smaller than average, pinks and picotees larger. More precise figures are given for some of the varieties listed, but these are for guidance only and it must be stressed that there is some variation from sample to sample.
It is prudent to sow 15g of seed per 100 plants required, so that only the strongest and healthiest plants will be used for planting. This figure can be adjusted to allow for the seed size of varieties which have very large or very small seed.
Emergence takes around 5 to 7 days under optimal conditions. At lower temperatures germination will be slower and the resulting plants less uniform.
